Fusalp Ski Wear

The skiing population had gradually increased since the 1960s, and when the Sapporo Olympic Games were held in 1972, a ski boom arrived in Japan. As for protection against cold such as wear and outer garments, the times changed from the age of knitwear as the mainstream to woven fabric materials, which have become common now. GOLDWIN also turned to improving the quality of skiing supplies, and entered into a partnership with Fusalp in France in 1970. Fusalp, who emphasizes the technology, had been continuously approached by companies from around the world, but did not partner with any other company to protect its technology. Nishida was fascinated by the technology of Fusalp, and made repeated visits to Fusalp to appeal his enthusiasm. His passion finally reached Fusalp and GOLDWIN became the first company in the world to join hands with Fusalp. After that, the evolution of ski wear started accelerating. In those days, a flat pattern cutting was common in Japan, but Fusalp had adopted three-dimensional cutting, which is a cutting process according to the curves of the body. This method was essential for making a beautiful silhouette that is fit to the body. The craftspeople disassembled the samples and learned the latest technology. After repeated research, the development of ski wear that fit the movement of the body was accomplished. Nishida felt there was something in common between Fusalp’s passion for products and GOLDWIN’s approach to manufacturing. He said, “I learned valuable technology and philosophy.” GOLDWIN launched sensational products one after another combining functionality and design, including the design which does not disturb movement while having a curved silhouette with a narrow waist, a one-piece type wear connecting pants and a jacket with a fastener thereby maintaining warmth, and buckling pants, etc. While keeping the characteristics of Fusalp, GOLDWIN’s originality was added, too, such as body shapes, colors and styles that matched Japanese people. Furthermore, the strategy that other companies did not have, such as full model change of the collection every season and holding fashion shows, which was unimaginable in those days also drew attentions and orders poured in every year.
